Storytelling

My later life passion is storytelling as a Spellbinder in our local public schools and other venues also, with children and/or adults, for a variety of occasions.

Story has both shaped and changed my life. During the Cold War with Soviet Communism, during a spell in the U.S. Army on Guam, having got myself on the wrong side of the First sergeant,, the lives of Abe Lincoln and of Jesus became my inspiration. Later in college, I minored in English literature.

As a psychotherapist for thirty plus years, I slowly discovered that story was a powerful agent of self-discovery and change, in fact, the only intervention that worked with some.

Happily I joined the Lexington spellbinder group in 2006. This past fall, 2008, I told regularly in four schools and Shriners Hospital. I have conducted workshops on storytelling at the Kentucky Storytelling annual conferences, and for Ohio psychologists at their annual retreat on the Union between psychology and spirituality.

In our spiritual Growth Network of Kentucky, we have conducted at number of workshops on the Power of Story. I write articles for several newsletters and catch and create stories.

Some recent writings are:

  • Is the Human Mind hardwired for story and metaphor?
  • Seven Great Plots in Story
  • Seven Habits of a Healthy and Happy Heart.
  • The Very First Storyteller.
  • The Mystery of You.
  • The Wizard of IS. (How to become your own wizard)
  • The Lost Boy who Found Himself.
